💊 Pseudoephedrine is a decongestant that shrinks blood vessels in the nasal passages. Dilated blood vessels can cause nasal congestion (stuffy nose).
💊 Pseudoephedrine is used to treat nasal and sinus congestion, or congestion of the tubes that drain fluid from your inner ears.
Important information 👶 Do not give pseudoephedrine to a child younger than 4 years old. 👃 Pseudoephedrine or other decongestants are contained in many combination medicines. ✋ Side effects
The most commonly reported adverse effects have included cardiovascular and (e.g. elevated blood pressure, tachycardia or arrhythmias), CNS stimulation (e.g. restlessness, insomnia,anxiety,tremor and rarely hallucinations), skin rashes, and urinary retention.
Do not give vitamin C (ascorbic acid) with pseudoephedrine.
🟡Acidic urine increases the elimination of ephedrine and pseudoephedrine and decreases the elimination half-life. The clinical significance is unknown.
Disease Reaction 🔴Cardiovascular disease -may cause tachycardia, arrhythmia, hypertension, reflex bradycardia, coronary occlusion, cerebral vasculitis, myocardial infarction
🔴Benign Prostatic hyperplasia -may cause or worsen urinary difficulty in patients with prostate enlargement due to smooth muscle contraction in the bladder neck via stimulation of alpha-1 adrenergic receptors.
🔴Diabetes-may cause increases in blood glucose concentrations
🔴Glaucoma-can induce transient mydriasis via stimulation of alpha-1 adrenergic receptors
