After 20+ hours, I finally finished this underrated gem from 2012, #SleepingDogs
Set in a semi-faithful reimagining of contemporary Hong Kong, this open-world game's gorgeous visuals look straight out of a Wong Kar-Wai/John Woo classic.
I started playing this game mainly because the setting of Hong Kong hasn't been more relevant in recent days, but the game's premise actually gave me a bit of pause.
This game is about a man named Wei Shen, an undercover Chinese-American cop working for the HK Police Force while infiltrating a local triad. If you've been listening to recent news, the HKPF and the HK triads had been working in tandem to suppress HK citizens. I didn't think it appropriate to play through a game that could be low-key HKPF propaganda.
Thankfully, I did anyway because the character-driven storytelling was actually quite satisfying. And the combat and driving segments were so well-done, these mechanics were actually what kept me hooked.
But the best thing about this game is the voice cast. 6 years before Crazy Rich Asians, this game boasts a full Asian/American cast including Will Yun Lee, Edison Chen, Lucy Liu and, surprisingly, honorary Asian-American Emma Stone in a supporting role before she got big lol, plus many more.
If you're ever in the mood for urban open-world games that aren't set in America, I couldn't recommend this game enough!
